A trip to London

Last Saturday Anne & I made a trip to London to visit the SWPP Trade Show. For the previous two years I've been a speaker at their National Convention and Trade Show. This year was a year of rest so we took the opportunity to visit the show without the pressure of making sure I arrived to give my seminar on time.

Our journey started before dawn with a bus trip into Nottingham to catch the East Midlands train into London. As we arrived as the station the cold, crisp dawn looked stunning , foretelling a great day ahead.

I've regularly travelled into London from Grantham with GNER so was looking forward to the comfort of a relaxing journey with a nice breakfast. In the event all the tea trolly could provide was a stale "Danish" pastry and instant coffee:-(

St Pancras to Hammersmith via the Piccadilly line was OK. At Hammersmith we dived into McDonalds for a breakfast bagel and decent coffee before plunging into the Novotel and the Trade Show.

The Trade Show was the expected collection of useful and useless exhibitors. We saw current and future suppliers and some great products we will be including into our range this year.

After the trade show we went to the National Portrait Gallery to see the Taylor Wessing exhibition.

We stopped for a late "al fresco" lunch at Pret a Manger opposite the National Portrait Gallery.

This gave us a great view of Nelson's column framed by nearby street lights.

The National Portrait Gallery has many interesting exhibitions and I particularly liked;

We arrived back at St Pancras to find that many East Midland trains had been cancelled - due to signal failure in the Leicester area.

Waiting for the train was extremely cold and frustrating. More and more people arrived expecting to catch a train. Even the Penguin theory (huddle, huddle, huddle) didn't improve the temperature. The situation was resolved and we gladly took our (pre-booked) seats for the stopping at all stations trip back to Nottingham.

All in all a successful and eventful trip with a couple of nice pictures in the process:-)

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

Hi I published this post on my KiddyPix blog yesterday and thought I'd share it here as well. KiddyPix is my Baby & Children's photography site.
Instead of a "Picture of the Week" I reported on a photo session at the Leicester General Hospital Saturday evening.

Each month I get a number of names and addresses for new mums or mums 2 be. About once a quarter I receive an email announcing a "deceased baby". Feeling that there must be something I could do to help these families I volunteered to work for the charity Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

Thursday morning I received an email from a mum 2 be who had just learned that her unborn baby would be still born at 25 weeks on Saturday, could I help. So I found myself at Leicester General 9.30pm Saturday evening and was ushered into the labour room just minutes after little J... had been stillborn. My task was to capture little J... to give the couple a lasting image of their lost child.

As a NILMDTS photographer I give my time, travel and images to the parents for NO CHARGE. The parents will receive a CD with my images retouched to clean up some of the defects, they can then use my images in whatever manor they like.

Rest assured that I'll not be placing any NILMDTS images on my BLOG.

Nottingham Council House

Ingrid & Charlie - A sneak preview

Earlier this week (Monday) my daughter (Ingrid) married Charlie at the Unitarian Church in Frenchay, Bristol.

So what does a girl do when her father is a Wedding Photographer - Ask her dad to take the pictures. BUT as father of the Bride I need to be a part of the action so her Brother (Gareth) volunteered to be chief photographer on her special day.

These are just a small selection of our images from her wedding to Charlie.

Ingrid just before departing for the church. The dress, trimmed with Nottingham lace, was made by her mother (Anne).

Ingrid's wedding ring was her grandmother's eternity ring. A local Jeweler had to expand it a little so it would fit.

Little Emily was her single Bridesmaid. Emily has grown since Ingrid was her mother's maternity nurse after she was born.

Sarah (who first employed Ingrid as a nanny 16 years ago) played the harp during the service.

Hi All, We've just returned from a fantastic seminar with Kevin Wilson FBIPP & Mark Lawrence at the Imperial War Museum - Duxford. Under the guidance of Kevin and Mark a select group of photographers enjoyed the opportunity to photograph Ella and Holly in a hanger with some classic World War 2 aircraft. Ella was even waring her mother's wedding dress - she has a brave mum!

Hi, It was a fantastic priviledge to be able to capture the wedding of Victoria and Charles last W/E in North Nottinghamshire.

We met Charles in the church listening to the singers rehersing.

Victoria looked simply stunning in her fantastic dress with veil and boquet.

Project 24

Hi,

Some years ago I inherited a 2 bedroom bungalow in Essex. Is was my parents home; they bought it new in the mid 50"s and never moved - so some significant memories! For the past 6 years we've been renting out the property and this February the latest tenant left giving Anne & I an opportunity to bring the property up to today's standards. This is the story of one compressed month of intense activity!

This was our very first view as we entered the property in early March. A radiator was leaking all over the parquet floor! Fortunately we'd arranged to meet a plumber and he rose to the occasion:)

Tony (the plumber) advised us to renew the complete central heating system - radiators, boiler and pipe-work! This was not a great surprise as our letting agent had needed to call in their tame plumber several times due to leaking radiators! So although the central heating was relatively new we accepted Tony's advice to renew the system completely.

On the same day we'd also arranged to meet an "odd job" man/gardner and a decorator. They duly came gave us their ideas on what they could do to bring the property into the 21st century!

Some of the other issues we found in the 2nd bedroom was some distinctly dodgy electrics and a hole borred through the wall to vent a tumble dryer - causing some ugly mildew. We believe these were installed by the tenant before last; therefore an electrician (employed by the letting agents) has passed this as safe when tenants changed.

The garden also left much to be desired!! Despite the Tenancy Agreement clearly saying NO PETS the last tenant had at least one dog. Dog sh*t (poo) littered the back lawn. It took a day for me to clear the lawn of dog excrement!

Also on our first day we had arranged to meet the local rep for Anglian Windows. I was aware that the front door was overdue for replacement, but when I arrived it became obvious that the soffit boards and gutters were needing attention.

So at the end of our first day we'd committed ourselves to;

Complete new central heating system
New soffit boards and gutters
New front door
Re Decorate 2 bedrooms, living room, hall & kitchen

We went to bed that night in our campervan "christmas crackered"! Having committed ourselves to some considerable expense - piggy banks will need to be raided!!

March passed with Anne and I making frequent trips down the A1 (300 miles return trip) in our campervan to oversee the work in progress.

Tony the plumber did sterling work getting the new boiler, radiators and pipe work installed in double quick time. However it was a shock when he said that he couldn't plug the new boiler into the electrics:( But he knew an electrician;)

The electrician convinced me that a complete house re-wire was necessary! This was a significant and unexpected extra expense!

Throughout March the central heating was installed, soffit and gutters replaced, the electrician came, created chaos and left within 1 day - without us even knowing precisely when he would be doing his work! We also found for ourselves a new (better organised) letting agent. The decorator came after the electrician and on seeing the situation immediately increased his price by £1,000!

Now in mid April we are at the end of this project!

At the front we've tided up the garden and had the new front door fitted.

We've worked hard on the back garden so that now it looks respectable and safe to walk around. A tall Holly has been removed and other shrubs trimmed (tamed?). The lawn is now green again.

Inside the property has been transformed. Ugly paint work is now a calm magnolia.

We've increased the loft insulation and cleaned and cleaned yet again!

Lessons learned?

Weatherspoons do good economical meals and have free wi-fi.
Don't ever let tradesmen work un-supervised!
Don't expect tradesmen to clean up after themselves. It took Anne a full day to clean up the mess left by the electrician, and another half day after the decorators.
Letting Agents need to be supervised.
Essex is very expensive!

We look forward to a new tenant moving in and some calm returning to our lives.

Last week it was my privilege to attend the GNPP/FEP Congress in Lyon, France.
The three day event was packed with World Class speakers covering; Reportage Wedding photography from France, Classic Wedding and Portrait photography from Spain, The latest Photoshop techniques from the USA and modern Contemporary photography from the UK, plus many more!

We also had plenty of free time to explore the beautiful city of Lyon.

Why Lyon? This is where the Lumière brothers produced their first Cine Film 150 years ago.

At the W/E I was invited to give a masterclass about my KiddyPix photography at the SWPP convention at the London Hammersmith Novotel. Although my talk was at 8am Friday morning the room was packed with standing room only! It's a great feeling to speak to a pack room!

Whilst in London Anne & I enjoyed some time to ourselves and these are some of my images from the trip;

"The Now I Lay ME Down To Sleep Foundation is there for parents and families to help aid them in their healing, bring hope to their future, and honour their child. It is through rememberence that a family can truly begin to heal."

The Foudation have reviewed our KiddyPix web site and selected us to be one of their affiliated photographers. We will be covering the Nottingham, Mansfield, Derby, Leicester, Grantham and Newark areas.

Chris and his Groomsmen were dressed in Kilts.
Chris's ring had their names and wedding date engraved around the outside.
St Michael's in Linby was a great setting for their wedding.
After the wedding we took them back into the church for some quiet romantic pictures

On the way to the hotel we stopped off for a quiet photo session

Pre Shoes is a new business in the Vale of Belvoir.

Karen & Will

It was a great priviledge to be invited to capture Karen & Will's wedding day yeasterday.
Karen looked stunning in her dressWill was relaxed when we caught up with him at St Mary's in Bottesford.
Will & Karen looked so happy during the service.
The service was conducted by Canon Alan Haydock.
St Mary's in Bottesford is often called the Cathedral of the Vale (of Belvoir)
Unusually they chose a Range Rover to take then to Woodland Walters for their reception.
Will and Karen are clearly very much in love with each over.

Last Sunday we took Sarah and Chris to Clumber Park for their pre-wedding shoot.

This was the first time either had a professional photograph since their school pictures, so they started out being quite nervous.

They certainly enjoyed a guiet and romantic walk in the park.

They are a lovely couple, clearly very much in love with each other.

We soon got them to relax in front of the camera.

Sarah particularly enjoyed our direction and weird ideas.

They both very much enjoyed our session with them and we are looking forward to capturing their wedding later this year.

It was a joy and priviledge to capture Rachel & Graham's wedding last Saturday.

Last weekend we took Katie and Neil out to their local park in Leeds for their pre-wedding shoot.

Katie and Neil are a lovely couple and we are priviledged to be photographing their wedding in Lincolnshire later this summer.

Clearly they are very much in love with each other, and enjoyed their stroll in their local park.

Katie is a dance teacher, which clearly comes across in these pictures.

We can see the joy in Katies face as Neil spins her arround.

The gardens made a perfect setting for this delightful couple.

Last W/E was great weather for a BBQ.

Whilst we enjoyed our red wine and BBQ'd burgers we were treated to a flying display by the local model aircraft enthusiasts.

They performed some fantastic stunts for our pleasure.

Hi,

We've just returned from a week's photography in Ireland. It was a great time with some stunning weather.

A part of the trip was to photograph the sun shades in use fitted to some new buildings so I'm showing below some of my images from this assignment.

Ken Clarke opens new warehouse in Bingham

Rushcliffe MP Ken Clarke took time out just from the election campaign to open a new warehouse for local High Tech business GWIBS 24-7.

Ken was gives a briefing about GWIBS business by their Sales & Marketing and Managing Directors, with their PR agent sitting in.

GWIBS had invited their key suppliers to the launch (& lunch). Ken said he wasn't going to give a "political" speach - and then did!

Ken cut the ribbon with GWIBS managing director, Graham White.

Ken also unveiled a plaque.

Ken also enjoyed a walk about to see the new warehouse full of stock ready for GWIBS to send out to the high tech projects they manage.

Taurus Littrow

Taurus Littrow are a local business who produce specialist solar shading (Brise Soleil) to address the growing need for for improved energy management in the working environment.

Here we see their shields on the walls of the new Magistrates Court in Loughborough.

Every part of these units are designed and manufactured by Taurus Littrow. They were keen for me to record the details as well as the "Grand Design".

Also in Loughborough these vertical blinds are on the Sir Richard Morris building at the university. The blinds move with the sun. So keeping the windows in shade.

GWIBS 247 Environmental Policy

Today I had an interesting PR job for a local hi-tech company.

They've entered a National Environmental competition for businesses. I had to take interesting pictures to demonstrate their environmental policy.

One of their most interesting actions was to give each member of staff their own named mug. This action has saved them buying 2000 plastic mug a MONTH! Saving both cost and plastic being thrown away!

Each GWIBS driver is equipped with a fully functional PDA. This is in constant contact with HO so keeping track of staff and stock. Jobs can be billed immediately and no paper is used.

GWIBS run a fleet of variable size vans; Small, Medium and Large. Vans are allocated to a job depending on the need of the job. So saving un-necessary fuel consumption.

GWIBS Staff are also encouraged to participate in a government sponsored scheme to supply staff with bicycles. 95% of the staff live close to the business and so using bicycles saves car miles.

GWIBS managers regularly review their performance against their environmental targets.

Purple for Polio

Rotary Clubs throughout the world are raising money to help finally eradicate Polio from the Arfican continent. In the UK next week local Rotary Clubs will be running lots of fund raising activites by local Rotary Clubs
In Bingham I was priviledged to be invited by the local Rotary Clubs to shoot their PR shots for these activities. These started today with the Mayor of Bingham (Maureen Stockwood) having her hair dyed and raising over £750 in sponsorship.

Maureen is a jovial "game for a laugh" character as can be seen by these pictures.

Maureen was laughing throughout the session.

It was such a pleasure to work with her - as I have before. Maureen has great sprit.
